Studio visit
Meet the maker: Sølvbord.
Sølvbord is one room above a courtyard in Copenhagen K, a workbench for eight, and Marie, who has run the silver ring workshop here for going on six years. Ask her how many people she has taught to solder and she will actually try to answer, before landing somewhere around four thousand: not a marketing number, just a rough tally she keeps because she is curious about it herself.
The two-hour version is the one most members book first: saw a strip of sterling silver, shape it around a mandrel, solder the join, file and polish until it looks like something you would buy rather than something you made. Nobody leaves with a perfect ring. Almost everyone leaves wearing it anyway.
The repair sessions are the quieter half of the studio’s work: people bringing in a chain that snapped, a signet ring that no longer fits, an earring that lost its pair years ago and has been sitting in a drawer since. Marie says she remembers the rings more than the faces: whose grandmother’s band got resized, whose engagement ring got its stone reset. Small, specific fixes, the kind that would otherwise never get done.
If you go once, go for the ring. If you go back, it is usually to fix one.
