The case for making bad pottery.

The case for making bad pottery.

Nobody’s first bowl is good. It leans. One side is thicker than the other. It looks, at best, like a bowl that has had a difficult week. This is not a failure of the workshop. It is what two hours at a pottery wheel actually produces, for everyone, every time.

The wheel does not care that you are an adult who is normally competent at things. It rewards patience, not experience, and it takes most people three or four tries before the clay stops winning. That gap, between how good you expected to be and how wonky the bowl actually is, turns out to be the useful part. It is a low-stakes reminder that being bad at something new is not a personality flaw. It is just what new looks like.

Keep the first one. Do not throw it out or leave it at the studio. A slightly lopsided bowl on a shelf is proof you showed up and tried the thing before you were any good at it, which is a rarer souvenir than it sounds.
